A 2m crocodile will be targeted for removal after it was spotted near a group of swimming children in Cairns northern beaches.

Concerns were raised earlier this month by a Trinity Park resident after they alerted three children who were swimming only 200m away from where the animal was spotted.

The same resident later saw another two children fishing just metres away from where the crocodile was photographed.

The crocodile was spotted behind Sussex Street in Trinity Park in a creek known as Moores Gully.

The concerned resident posted an anonymous message on social media warning the community.

“It’s definitely longer than me and I’m 185cm,” they said.

“The same crocodile has been in this creek since the floods and is regularly seen by a few of us around Sussex Street.”

The resident was not initially concerned by the croc’s presence.

“I thought it was exciting to have a crocodile in its natural habitat so close by and I thought the creek was pretty safe,” they said.

But after seeing children seemingly unaware they decided to report the croc.

“(It’s) something I don't agree with as I think this creek is obviously crocodile habitat being linked to Blue Water harbour, but clearly some people aren't crocwise and definitely aren't monitoring their children,” they said.

“Some residents have enjoyed viewing this crocodile and would be disappointed to see it removed.

“Please have a word to your children about safety near waterways and creeks.”

A Department of the Environment and Science spokesman confirmed they had received a number of reports regarding a crocodile in the area and have contacted contractors in regards to its removal.

“DESI has received several reports of a crocodile in Trinity Park,” he said.

“The Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation has been notified, and it is anticipated that they will attempt to capture the crocodile.

“DESI thanks the community members for reporting the crocodile by using the QWildlife app or by calling 1300 130 372

“Wildlife officers investigate every sighting report, and estuarine crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.”
