Cairns weather: Far North Queensland expected to remain the same over few weeks

Cairns has sweated through a hotter-than-average October with the weather boffins lifting the lid on what’s to be expected in November.

BOM's rebrand is 'typical public service waste and indulgence' at the public's expense

Cairns has sweated through a hotter-than-average October with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting more of the same to linger throughout November.

The latest data from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has shown Cairns experienced 30 days above 30 degrees, more than double the average for the month of October of 12.7 days.

The only day to dip below 30 degrees last month was the same day more than 40mm of rain fell.

The average daily maximum temperature according to BOM is usually 29.6 degrees during the month of October.

This year it was 31.7C.

And the hot and humid weather is expected to stick around the Far North over the next couple of weeks, with slight showers also expected.

BOM forecaster Brooke Pagel said the temperature would sit around the 30 degree mark for at least the next two weeks, with extreme humidity.

“For the next week or two we have a high pressure system dominating at the moment,” she said.

“We are looking at a repeating pattern of the weather.”

On average, October minimums sit around 20.6 degrees.

Last month the average minimum was 22.9 degrees.

Ms Pagel said this week would be partly cloudy with a shower or two most days.

“We are not expecting anything significant, even the rainfall total may be 6mm maximum, which will be this Saturday, even then that’s only a slight chance,” she said.

Minimums are expected to be about 23 degrees, average for this time of year, she said.

“For the outlook even over the next couple of months, we are expecting just with the negative Indian Ocean Dipole and La Nina, it will lead to the really wet conditions,” she said.

“We are expecting that to last for a while. We are not looking at too significant totals for the tropics, but it is expecting to be a slightly above average wet season.”
