A woman on trial for the attempted murder of her mother on the Cairns Esplanade has described the moment “something exploded in her” before she attacked with a box cutter.

Isabella Aneta Cisarova, 22, gave evidence on Friday, recounting the lead up to the moment she allegedly tried to kill her mother on the Cairns Esplanade on November 23, 2022.

Ms Cisarova said on the day of the incident she left the home of her grandmother with the intention of “confronting” her mother after overhearing a conversation between her younger siblings that upset her.

Ms Cisarova told the court in the lead up on the day of the incident she was “really upset”, her mood had “gone rapidly downhill”, and she was worried about her siblings.

Ms Cisarova said that she left her grandmother in her wheelchair in a hallway while she went back into the home and retrieved the box cutter from a cupboard.

Crown prosecutor Nathan Crane put it to Ms Cisarova the first time she touched the knife was when she was angry with her mother and she was going to see her.

However, Ms Cisarova maintained that she still only intended to speak to her mother.

“I wanted to talk to her and confront her about the disturbing things I had heard,” Ms Cisarova told the court.

“I was really angry and wild, I didn’t know what I was going to do, I just wanted the knife with me.”

Ms Cisarova walked, pushing her grandmother in the wheelchair, towards the Esplanade where she knew her mother would be with her siblings during a supervised visit.

She left her grandmother one street away from the Muddy’s playground before continuing on to find her mother.

Ms Cisarova said she observed her mother and waited till her siblings left before she walked towards her mother to “speak to her”.

“It felt weird when I saw she looked at me and said nothing and I changed my mind, I decided I wasn’t going to talk to her and I kept walking.”

Ms Cisarova said she walked about ten metres past her mother before “something exploded” in her.

“I just turned around and went back, I went to her, fell into her, and started hitting her, swinging my arms, I had the knife in my hand,” she said.

“I don’t remember what I said, I know I was screaming. I don’t know what I was thinking or doing, I just snapped.”

Crown prosecutor Nathan Crane told a Cairns Supreme Court jury Ms Cisarova had inflicted a 15cm neck wound to her mother with a boxcutter, with the jury shown an image of the bloodied object. Picture: Supplied

“I don’t recall what I was trying to do, I just went wild and started attacking her.”

Defence counsel Tim Grau asked when Ms Cisarova first noticed her mother was bleeding.

“I just remember I had blood everywhere, I just stopped and noticed blood everywhere.

“I stopped and put the knife on the ground, I saw blood on her neck and everywhere and it was on my arms.”

Ms Cisarova maintained she didn't intend to kill her mother and has pleaded not guilty.

“I didn’t want to hurt her like I did. I was shocked and didn’t know it was real.”

Mr Crane asked when Ms Cisarova took the knife out of her bag.
“I took it out before I crossed the road and passed her on the footpath,” Ms Cisarova answered.

The court heard Ms Cisarova held the knife in her right hand when she approached her mother.

The jury was then shown CCTV footage of the incident in which Ms Cisarova could be seen approaching her mother from behind and appeared to draw her right hand across her mothers neck.

The court earlier heard how the relationship between Ms Cisarova and her mother had unravelled after police were called to their home for a domestic violence incident in Czechia in 2017, where her father was arrested.

Mr Crane then asserted that Ms Cisarova tried to kill her mother to which she replied “no, that is not true.”
