‘Government can’t regulate behaviour’: Doubts over Labor’s domestic violence plan

A STREET chaplain turned singer who was constantly exposed to domestic violence on Cairns streets has released new music with the intention of pushing hard on the important issue.

Singer songwriter Danielle Davis’ latest single Howl and new EP Hard Conversations was designed to educate and empower an inspirational message.

“I saw my fair share of domestic violence during my time as a volunteer Chaplain, and it did not sit well with me at all,” Ms Davis said.

“I don’t hold back in my songwriting. I’m fierce in my determination to empower.”

Ms Davis said she wrote the song hoping to spread the message “enough is enough”.

“There are so many women, and men for that matter, being convinced by their partner that the abuse they suffer is their own fault,” she said.

“One of my aims is to tell the victims that no, it isn’t their fault, not at all.

“I want them to be free from the distorted view they have of themselves, to rid themselves of self blame, change their mindset, see they are not alone in what is happening to them and take steps to remove themselves from an abusive relationship, seek support, and start to live a real life.

“That is something we are all entitled to. Domestic violence is violence at the end of the day; not love, but control.”

Ms Davis has been writing songs for some time. In 2020 she won the McGinty’s Songwriting Competition in the Emerging Artist category at the Yungaburra Folk Festival for her song Lawless.

“I’ve been obsessed with music and singing since I was a little girl growing up here in Cairns. I was banned from singing in the car, my vocals being of such volume it was considered I was a danger to other drivers,” she said.

“I was a 90s kid, and so it’s not altogether surprising that my style reflects the heavy but melodic 2000s rock-punk soundscape characteristic of that era.”

Ms Davis has also been recognised in 2020 for her writing talent in the Australian Songwriter’s Association annual songwriting competition for her songs Mad, Shoebox House and Living Water.
