THOUSANDS of Far Northerners rolled up their sleeves to get the Covid-19 jab at Cairns’ second mass vaccination hub at the weekend.

A total of 3157 Pfizer doses were administered by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital at Health Service at the convention centre hub.

Cairns’ nursing director of the Covid-19 vaccination program Jane Jordan said 1101 jabs were delivered on Friday at the Convention Centre mass vaccination hub and 1226 on Saturday. More than 800 jabs were administered on Sunday.

Ms Jordan said this weekend had been a “a little quieter” than the previous - when 3707 jabs were delivered - but it was still good numbers.

“We’ve really been up against a few things, we had the races last week and this week we have a marathon.

“But I’m happy with the progress, we have a really good streamlined process and we’re getting good turn outs.”

Ms Jordan said on Sunday she had deployed some nurses and medical students to the Esplanade and shopping centres for some “street advertising” in a bid to attract more walk-ins.

“And we also had an employer who sent down a bus load of their employees.

“So we’re open six days a week now, it would be good to see more employers say ‘c’mon we’re all going together’ and make it a team thing.”

The hub reopens Tuesday at 7am and runs each day until Sunday.

Queensland-wide, a record 33,004 people turned up to community hubs on Saturday, and 56,907 jabs were delivered across the full weekend.

Ms Palaszczuk said she was “pretty sure” the heroic efforts would see the state tick over to 60 per cent of people with their first shot, with more than 41 per cent fully vaccinated.

She said the state’s vaccination rate would be a key factor in whether borders could reopen and Queenslanders could see their interstate relatives for the Christmas holidays.
