It’s out with the old and in with the new at Cannon Park Racecourse, with a milestone reached in the Cairns Jockey Club’s bid to redevelop its clubhouse.

Unveiled in late 2021, plans for the new Cairns Jockey Club clubhouse have been recently green-lit by Cairns Regional Council, but before construction can begin the organisation has some demolition work to do.

An application submitted to the council on January 12 requests approval for the demolition of the current Wolf Blass house building to make way for the glitzy new Cannon Park clubhouse.

Construction of the new clubhouse will require the demolition of the Wolf Blass house building identified by the number 8 on this diagram.

The Cairns Jockey Club previously lodged plans with Cairns Regional Council to build a modern club facility to be used during its racing events, with approval coming from council in December last year.

Plans designate a 648sq m single-storey structure with an 880sq m outdoor terrace perfect for punters enjoying the racing.

Located on the bend, large glazed windows will provide the crowd with unobstructed views of the course as they make their bets and cheer on their gallopers.

Cairns Jockey Club general manager Cameron Riches said they were looking forward to the future of the club.

“We are very excited about the upgrade coming,” Mr Riches said.

“The Jockey Club will be ramping up its events as we move into the new year with eyes already turning to the spring carnivals.

“Our next event will be our innaugrural Chinese New Year Race Day on Saturday, February 4.

“We will have six local races, a Chinese luncheon, lion dances, and a lantern painting workshop for kids who can then join the lantern parade.”

Mr Riches said it was not often the club raced on a Saturday, so he was expecting to see locals out in full force.

Luncheon tickets are available on the Jockey Club website from $145 with $10 general admission.

Other events on the early years racing calendar include Tradies and Ladies race day on March 25 and the 100 Club Corporate Race day on April 21.
