THE trial of a man charged with the murder of a Mareeba Show worker is set to begin in Cairns Supreme Court later this month.

Kyam Keith Broadby is expected to plead not guilty to the murder of Ayr resident Nathaniel Wailu at Kerribee Park in Mareeba in July 2019 at a trial expected to last from five to seven days before Justice Susan Brown.

Following the alleged incident where Mr Wailu, 35, was found unconscious, he was transported to Townsville Hospital with critical head injuries and subsequently died.

Mr Broadby, 25, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm but the charge was upgraded to murder following the death of Mr Wailu.

Another man was also charged with murder but charges were discontinued in October 2020.

Mr Broadby was granted bail after appearing in Cairns Magistrates Court charged with grievous bodily harm.

The Launceston man was arrested in March this year when he was extradited by Mareeba detectives from Tasmania to Cairns.
