FIREFIGHTERS are used to attending fires, car crashes and Hazmat events, but rescuing a child from inside a vending machine is the kind of incident you might think never happens.

But when called out shortly after noon on Sunday to an incident involving a youngster at Sugarworld Shopping Centre in precisely that situation, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Station Officer Guy Bulmer said it was not the first time his colleagues had undertaken such a rescue.

SO Bulmer said the vending machine was near a supermarket and it appeared the child had found way in through the prize collection door.

“The child was not harmed during the extrication,” he said.

“In fact the child seemed quite amused at the toys inside the vending machine and the growing number of spectators”.

SO Bulmer said firefighters were pleased that incident went smoothly.

“We also managed to remove the child without causing damage to the vending machine.

“We have been to a couple of these incidents before, they are not very common but they have occurred in the past.”

SO Bulmer estimated that the child might have been three years old.

Queensland Ambulance confirmed they were called to incident but were called off as they were not needed.
