From celebrating national artists to bringing international icons to the Far North, Cairns Art Gallery director Andrea May Churcher has stepped down from the prestigious role after 14 years at the helm.

Ms May Churcher helped bring world-class exhibitions to Cairns, including the Archibald Prize exhibition in its first venture outside NSW and Victoria, Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series, Andy Warhol, Ellis Rowan, Brett Whiteley, and the Archie 100.

“It has been an honour to lead such an important Queensland gallery with an exceptionally creative and generous community, including the foundation and gallery members, philanthropic supporters, partners and, of course, artists,” Ms May Churcher said.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding experience working with the talented team of staff at the gallery along with gallery board members led by chair, Mr Doug McKinstry, who have invested so much of their time to assist us to achieve our ambitious vision for the gallery.”

Cairns Art Gallery chair Doug McKinstry said Ms May Churcher’s contribution to the cultural life of Cairns had been transformative.

“Andrea is leaving an exceptional legacy. Her unique combination of creative and entrepreneurial skills has cemented the gallery’s national reputation for presenting landmark exhibitions that highlight the region,” Mr McKinstry said.

“Her focused strategic vision, together with artistic excellence and strong community engagement, ensured that contemporary art’s relation to wider social, cultural and political contexts was always foregrounded.”

Ms May Churcher will relocate to Spain to pursue other professional interests.
