PINK and lavender were the favourite colours trackside while enjoying a punt with family and friends was the winning way to spend Ladies Day at the Amateurs on Friday.
Ladies Day is the first day of the two-day racing event bringing jockeys, horses, and trainers from across the country to claim their stake in the whopping $642,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Andy Birrell, a seasoned racegoer, said the quality of the racing and the atmosphere were outstanding and they would be back with friends next year.
“We often go to race meetings around Australia and this is our first time at Cairns Amateurs and we will be back again next year,” he said.
“The racing is sensational. We were blown away and it couldn’t get any better.
Theresa Walters and her friends travel from across Australia each year to spend the Amateurs weekend together.
“It’s going to be a fun two days. I think it’s a really fun atmosphere, an opportunity to get dressed up, and everyone is so friendly. “
There was $30,000 worth of prizes for Fashions on the Field.
News Corp national fashion editor and fashion judge Annabelle Louise Falco said the quality of the fashion was amazing.
“I had high standards to begin with and they have all been exceeded and I love the thought, care and consideration that has been put into the outfits,” she said
“Lots of bold colours, with pink and lavender purple being the popular colours of the season.”
Yellow and grey were the winning colours of the day, with winner Brittney Tamou telling the Cairns Post the competition was tough.
“The competition up here is always tough, and there were so many amazing outfits, and it’s been fun to be here and bring my own style to the stage, which is nice, she said.
Cairns Amateurs president David Nigel Goodman is confident that the numbers will be high again on Saturday.
“The turnout is great; it’s very fresh, clean and we have really good numbers and are happy with how things are going,” he said
“Tomorrow all our corporate areas are full.
“Amateurs is an iconic event and is well known across Australia and it’s three things — we have high-quality entertainment, amazing races and spectacular fashion.”
