UPDATE: Rumours of the permanent closure of a Clive Palmer-owned golf course in Port Douglas have been addressed, but course staff remain tight-lipped about its sudden pause in operations last week.

When the Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course in Port Douglas suddenly and unexpectedly shut its doors on Friday it sparked a number of wild reasons as to why.

The United Australia Party leader’s own media adviser said it was due to a bomb threat on the weekend – something staff at the picturesque links new nothing about when contacted by the Cairns Post.

There was also speculation an election night party for Mr Palmer was also in the offing.

But talk of it’s demise appear to be greatly exaggerated, with the course swinging its doors open on Sunday and golfers back on the course.

The 18-hole tropical paradise was closed for two days “but everything is back up and running now as per normal” a spokeswoman from the course said today.

“We were back open on Sunday morning with golf bookings and roast lunch,” she said.

“As of 6am on Sunday morning just gone, everything was back to normal.”

Palmer Sea Reef declined to comment further as to why it was closed.

Security personnel were turning around cars and not allowing anyone near the club house or the course itself on Friday.

Mr Palmer, through his United Australia Party, has been contacted for comment.

EARLIER: The reason behind a decision to keep a prestige Far North golf course out of bounds to the public has been revealed.

There was speculation an election night party for Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course owner, billionaire businessman and chair of the United Australia Party Clive Palmer could be in the offing.

But a media advisor for Mr Palmer put that theory to bed, saying the course has been closed due to a bomb threat.

It was reported on Friday that staff had been asked to leave the premises and golfers were told to pack up their clubs and stop playing.

The clubhouse was open once again on Sunday.

The Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course bills itself as the “finest tropical links golf course in Australia”, measuring 6135m and offering three different teeing grounds to allow for golfers of all abilities.

It was designed by the late Michael Wolveridge Thomas Perrett and is regularly ranked in Australia’s top 100 courses, with the grounds maintained to championship standard all year round.

It’s also home to some truly unique hazards, such as this large saltwater crocodile filmed last year.
