Emergency services were called to a two-car crash on the Captain Cook Highway south of Palm Cove.

At 4pm paramedics were called to the crash at the corner of Foley Rd and the highway.

The head-on collision is understood to have caused one vehicle to flip onto its roof.

Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services units were sent to the incident along with Queensland Ambulance Service crews.

A QAS spokeswoman said a female occupant of one vehicle appeared to be uninjured.

However a man aged in his 40s was trapped in his vehicle after it crashed down an embankment.

“He’s got shoulder injuries and minor head injury,” she said.

Extra police units were dispatched to handle traffic control around the crash.

The trapped driver was freed from the wreckage and taken to Cairns Hospital about 4.50pm.

Police said a grey sedan reported to be driving erratically and travelling on the wrong side of the road was not involved in the Palm Cove crash.
