A new date has been set for the trial of Peniola Liu, charged with murdering father-of-two Alex Ollson at Innisfail in 2020.

A date has been set for the retrial of Peniola Liu, charged with murdering father-of-two Alex Ollson at Innisfail on December 19, 2020.

After a three-day trial that ended on December 2, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict and was dismissed.

“There is no prospect of the jury coming to a unanimous decision,” a note the jury passed to Chief Justice Helen Bowskill at the end of the trial read.

Liu, 32, pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to the murder of Mr Ollson, 28.

Mr Ollson, a father of two, died early in the morning on Saturday, December 19, 2020 after Liu assaulted him at the Edith Street taxi rank in Innisfail.

The assault was captured on CCTV and was replayed to jurors during the trial.

The new trial has been set down for Monday, February 6, 2023 at 10am before Justice James Henry.

Liu has been remanded in custody until then.
