CAIRNS’ reputation as a hockey nursery received a boost this weekend when 20 juniors were picked for Queensland squads.
Eight were picked for the Queensland under-15s squad, while 12 were named in the under-16 squad.
The under-15s were chosen following the state championships last month.
The squad will meet in February for a weekend of trials where two boys’ and two girls’ teams will be named to compete at the Australian championships.
The Queensland team will compete in Narellan, NSW, in April.
The under-16s will attend a development camp in Townsville in November.
Queensland Hockey split the state in two for the camps.
Another will be held in Brisbane. Cairns Hockey officials were rapt with the results as the Cairns region produced more Queensland squad members than any other outside of Brisbane.
