HARD work, determination and a shift to a rival cycling club is helping Cairns speedster Siena Goulding pedal towards her big goal of one day becoming a world champion.

The nine-year-old joined the Townsville Cycling Club midway through last year with the goal of taking her track riding to the next level.

Young cyclist Sienna Goulding, 9, won the Under 11 years 200 metre flying start race, 500 metre time trail race and 2000 metre scratch race at the Queensland track championships in Brisbane in December, beating the record for the 200 metre flying start race. Picture: Brendan Radke

“I go down to the Townsville club about once a month and the reason why I go is because of the banked track,” she said.

“There is also more competition and I get better prepared for riding on the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

“I love the banked track now I’ve gone really, really, really fast on it. It is really good for getting extra speed and to practice my technique.”

At last month’s AusCycling Queensland Junior State Track Championships, held at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane, Goulding took out gold in the under-11 girls’ flying 200m, 500m time trial and 2000m scratch race, as well as breaking a seven-year-old state record in the flying 200m.

“I set goals at the start of the year and my goal was to try and break a state record,” she said.

“I was really proud of myself that I could do what I wanted to do.”

Goulding narrowly missed out on breaking the 500m time trial record as well.

“I missed out by four one-hundredths of a second,” she said.

“Since I am in under-13s next year, as I’ve finished my two years of under-11s, I’m going to try and break the under-13s state record next time.”

With the track season done and dusted, Goulding will take a well-earned break from the bike and get back into her swimming, before the new road cycling season starts in the coming months.

No stranger to breaking records, Goulding broke the junior state record for the under-9 girls’ 500m time trial as a seven-year-old in 2019.

Her abilities on the track have resulted in a sponsorship with cycling clothing brand Monton Sports Australia, as a junior ambassadorial role.

“For a nine-year-old, she’s starting to get some pretty good runs on the board and it all leads towards her big long-term goal,” said Goulding’s father, Clinton.

“She wants to be the world champion at some stage and these are all things that are contributing to it.”
