A BURLEIGH cafe won’t be making a cent of profit this weekend as the owner hands out free coffee to women and donates any profits from male purchases.
Brodie Green, the owner of James Street’s hole-in-the-wall coffee shop Seadog, said he was “disgusted” about Alabama’s abortion law and took to his business Instagram to share a photo of his disappointment.
He received dozens of messages from people supporting him, but one man who wasn’t pleased.
Mr Green received a message from the critic saying: “If women took the pill, and (kept) their legs together or said no there would be no abortions.”
The message left Mr Green outraged, but he then thought of the perfect revenge.
“I felt really disgusted about what happened at Alabama. The fact that women no longer have the right to choose, that contraception has been banned, and the only thing that is available is condoms,” he said.

“I wrote back saying ‘Freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want without consequences, it just means I can’t stop you from saying it’.
“I thought, you can’t fight fire with fire, so how do I turn this into a positive?
“I (replied) ‘Because of you, we will be giving women free coffee this whole weekend’. Also all men who come into the cafe to pay for their coffee will be donating that whole amount directly to a charity.”

Hundreds of locals have taken Mr Green up on the offer and have applauded him in person and on social media. He plans on donating the profits to a charity he is yet to confirm.
“We have had so many people come in yesterday and this morning, people who didn’t know it was an issue,” Mr Green said.
“About seven women came in yesterday crying about how amazing it is to have someone to support them. And for us, that absolutely means the world.
“I have had men and women abuse me. But it’s not that I’m pro abortions, or against abortions. We are not taking sides, we are just saying it’s their right to choose.”

Yesterday he gave away between 200-250 cups of coffee to women and made about $400 from men’s purchases.
“We are donating the whole amount. It might not seem like a lot, but we are a small business,” he said.
“Foodworks has donated all the milk, we have a local baker who donated all the baked goods.
“I encourage any other small or large businesses in the area and also Queensland to do the same thing. It makes a big difference in the community.”
