The northern end of Darwin’s Bundilla Beach has officially reopened to the public five months after it was closed for significant upgrades.

Initial works for stage one of the Bundilla Beach master plan were made accessible to the public on Thursday, with features including footpaths, improved greenery, shade shelters, public lighting, CCTV and more to mark its reopening.

The master plan – a $500,000 investment by the City of Darwin, supported by a $3 million commitment from the Northern Territory Government – was created to develop a master plan about the future use of the Bundilla area.

As part of the opening, the Cyclone Tracy kinetic structure, Coriolis, and a new dog park were opened.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was pleased to reopen the north end of the area.

“These initial works are the first stage of achieving the longer-term vision for Bundilla Beach, which will see the entire area transformed to become a cool, green and natural space that supports leisure and recreation activities,” he said.

“We are pleased to reopen Atkins Drive, from Conacher ST through to the Darwin Sailing Club, to the public.”

Mr Vatskalis said key feedback received from the community during the development of the master plan was the “desire” for a new dog park.

“The new dog park features two conveniently fenced sections to allow for off-leash exercise, with one space dedicated to small dogs and another space set aside for more active dogs to enjoy.”

“Both areas feature seating, water fountains and easy access from Atkins Drive through to the lagoon and East Point Rd

“The southern end of the Bundilla Beach area remains a construction site while final works take place, however I look forward to opening the remaining area to the public in May 2025.”

The design for Coriolis – representing Cyclone Tracy – was revealed on June 7, 2024 – more than a month after the consultation period for the master plan concluded.
