COULD Brodie Deverell be the best signing of the Barrier Reef Big Bash?

No pace bowler is in better form than the Rovers spearhead, who has been on an absolute tear in his past two Cricket Far North games for the Green Machine.

Against quality opposition in Atherton and Norths, Deverell, who is also a gun Aussie rules footballer, has been the chief destroyer, taking 10 wickets at an average of 6.1

With an economy rate of 3.5, it’s the perfect lead-in to the inaugural competition, in which he will suit up for Badgers.

His figures in the 50-over format of the CFN first grade competition are outstanding, leaping to sixth on the wicket-taking leaderboard with 19 scalps.

At a clip of 9.74 and a storied representative history, Deverell was already one of the strike bowlers to keep an eye on in this tournament.

His club captain at Rovers, Brenton Edwards, serves as his opening bowling partner, and after taking 5-37 against the defending premier Atherton side Deverell has found form at the right time.

“It’s exactly what you want,” Edwards said.

“He doesn’t get much of an opportunity with the bat but he makes it count with the ball.”

The strategy at club land is executed superbly: one suffocates the man on the strike with good line and length, and the other reaps the rewards.

They trade who benefits with the wickets - they are both superb at their craft - but Edwards, who will captain Dare Devils, will now must confront the unenviable task of facing up to Deverell when they face off in a few weeks.

Edwards will get a look at his opening bowling partner in the first game of the new league.

Deverell is set to bowl in tandem with Queensland Country and Far North rep Jake Roach, and it could be unmissable viewing.

Roach has long been one of the most outstanding all-rounders in FNQ cricket, and his ability with bat and ball will both be depended upon by Badgers when they start their campaign against Hurricanes on Friday.

Their bowling partnership could be frightening to any opposition batting lineup, as they face the challenge of navigating those eight, potentially destructive, overs.

Hurricanes will be the first to take on that role, and fireworks might ensure with Michael Salerno unlikely to tell his squad to take it easy.

Badgers play Hurricanes at Griffith Park this Friday from 6.30pm.
