Woman trapped after massive gum tree crushes campsite

An Easter camping trip has taken a horror turn after a falling tree crushed a campsite, pinning a young woman for 30 minutes.

A woman has been flown to hospital after a massive gum tree fell on her campsite, crushing a gazebo and leaving her trapped underneath for more than half an hour.

The woman, who is in her twenties, was sitting with friends and their dogs at a camping area in a Southern Downs National Park near the NSW/ Qld border on Easter Saturday when the tree “suddenly toppled”.

Crashing down onto a vehicle, the tree also completely destroyed the group’s gazebo and trapped the woman.

The Toowoomba RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called to the scene just before 4.30pm, with a critical care doctor and ambulance flight paramedics attending.

Upon arrival the woman was treated and prepared for her flight, where she was assessed to have suffered impact injuries to her back.

She was flown to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

No other people or pets were injured.
