Tyler Vandesteeg: Accused killer denied bail over alleged drug burglary murder

A man accused of shooting dead a tradie allegedly recorded himself saying “I f--king murdered someone yeah what a dumb c--t” hours later.

A man accused of shooting dead a young tradie during a suspected home invasion allegedly recorded an admission to the crime hours later, a court has been told.

Police allege a 13-second video located on Tyler Vandesteeg’s phone captured him saying “I f--king murdered someone yeah what a dumb c--t” at 9.40pm on December 2 last year.

Justice Jane Dixon refused the 29-year-old bail in the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday afternoon, saying she was satisfied he was an unacceptable risk of further offending or failing to answer bail.

Mr Vandesteeg was one of three men charged with murder, aggravated home invasion and armed robbery over an alleged drug raid that left two people dead at 4am on December 2, 2024.

He has yet to enter pleas to the charges.

Police allege he was one of four people who barged into tradie Jack Gilmour’s Rye home and shot him dead – but not before Mr Gilmour let off a shot of his own and killed Charlyze Haytor, 19.

The court was told Mr Vandesteeg’s parents remained supportive of him and had offered up a $100,000 bail guarantee, but this did not persuade Justice Dixon that he should be released from custody.

Refusing bail, Justice Dixon summarised the evidence police allege ties Mr Vandesteeg to the crime, including phone records, DNA found on two shells at the scene and digital records on the accused man’s phone.

The judge said police allegedly located 10 screenshots of news articles about the shock incident, a video of apparently stained shoes being disposed and the alleged recorded admission.

Mr Vandesteeg is set to face a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 22.
