A young girl has suffered a fractured pelvis after being hit by a car on the way home from school in Adelaide’s northwest.

On Monday about 4.30pm, the 13-year-old was stepping off the bus on the eastern side of West Lakes Boulevard in Hendon and stood on the median strip waiting to cross the road to her home, which was metres away.

A woman driving an orange MG SUV then allegedly mounted the median strip and struck the young girl, throwing her into the air.

“All I remember is the car hitting me and I went bang and I fell so I couldn’t see anything,” the year 9 student told 9News.

As the teenager was on the road “in shock”, the driver allegedly stopped the car but drove off shortly after, failing to assist the girl.

Witnesses of the incident stopped their cars and rushed to the girl’s aid.

“As soon as they saw it happen, they got out of their car and rushed to help me,” the teenager said.

“I think a nurse also got down and was with me until the ambulance arrived.”

The girl’s father, Ravi Kanugodu, was appreciative of those who came to his daughter’s aid, but criticised the driver of the SUV.

“At least the basic human thing to do is to stop and to see if any medical attention is required,” he said.

“The situation was handled by strangers stopping by, so the good thing is there are good people around.”

The 13-year-old was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis and lacerations to her leg and head.

On Tuesday, South Australia Police located the MG SUV in Seaton with damage to its headlight and mirror.

The driver – a 68-year-old woman – was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, due care and fail to report collision.

The woman licence has been suspended for 12 months and she’s been bailed to attend Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 25.

Investigators are still seeking witnesses who may have captured the vehicle on dashcam or CCTV footage and urge them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.
