The search for a former radio host who went missing near croc-infested waters has been called off after one week.
Roman Butchaski hosted a fishing show on 2GB radio station before he went missing near the Olive River crossing near Cape York on November 12.
An extensive search of the river and surrounding bushland by SES volunteers and wildlife officers on the ground and a rescue helicopter was called off after just seven days.
“We have found no sign of the missing person,” Senior Sergeant Ed Lukin told reporters on Wednesday.
A quad bike, fishing rod and an Esky containing an uneaten lunch were found during an aerial search of the riverbank.
A 3m crocodile was also spotted in the vicinity of the quad bike.
However, despite the strange circumstances of Mr Butchaski’s disappearance, police have ruled out the possibility that he was taken by a crocodile.
“I have worked with the department on a number of crocodile attacks, they are extremely good at what they do and they are confident that a croc is not involved and I am happy with that assumption,” Sergeant Lukin said.
“There was a 3m crocodile seen close to the ATV; however, there is no indication that animal was involved on an attack on the missing person.
“It is my understanding that that crocodile will not be targeted for removal.”
The area surrounding Olive River is well-known crocodile territory.
