NSW police chief pleads for calm and warns against retribution after Bondi terror attack
NSW’s top police officer has called for calm and warned against retribution after a Bondi terror attack killed at least 12 people during Channukah celebrations.
NSW’s most senior police officer has made a plea for calm and urged against “retribution” after the Bondi terror attack in which at least a dozen people died.
Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the mass shooting on the first night of Channukah was “disgraceful”, adding: “The Jewish community has a right to feel safe.”
The horror unfolded at 6.47pm on Sunday night with Mr Lanyon saying 29 people have been taken to hospital, including two police officers.
He told reporters: “Could I ask that this is a time of calm. This is a time where I want to make sure that there is no retribution.
“The police are investigating thoroughly. We have acted promptly. We have taken decisive action. Could I just ask for calm in the community, allow the police to do our job.”
He added: “Our thoughts, prayers and love go to all the families and all of those that were involved tonight.
“We know that there were many people there to celebrate a happy occasion, the celebration of Chanukkah and there was well over a thousand people there when this took place.
“This type of disgraceful activity, this wanton use of violence, the taking of innocent lives is unacceptable to New South Wales. It’s not our way of life.”
‘Support one another’
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), the Council of Imams NSW and the Australian Muslim said it condemned the shootings.
In a statement, the groups said: “These acts of violence and crimes have no place in our society. Those responsible must be held fully accountable and face the full force of the law.
“Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those who witnessed or were affected by this deeply traumatic attack. We acknowledge the pain, fear, and distress felt across the community and extend our sincere compassion and support to all who are grieving.
“We urge the community to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and support one another during this challenging time.
“This is a moment for all Australians, including the Australian Muslim community, to stand together in unity, compassion, and solidarity, rejecting violence in all its forms and affirming our shared commitment to social harmony and the safety of all Australians.”
