A36-year-oldman has died in a suburban Melbourne shopping centre after fleeing police who were attempting to arrest him for outstanding family violence matters.
The man, who was known to police, entered Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s southeast just after 1.10pm on Friday.
“He had jumped off a balcony of the apartment he was staying at into the shopping centre grounds and ran into the shopping centre,” Detective Inspector Dean Thomas told a press conference.
“He was being pursued by police as they were attempting to arrest him.”
After briefly losing sight of the man, police searched a female toilet block where they noticed men’s shoes at the foot of one of the cubicles.
“They forced the door and noticed the male they were wanting to apprehend was in there, and it was clear he had injured himself with what appeared to be an edged weapon,” Inspector Thomas said.
Police gave the man first aid, before ambulance officers took over and moved him to a parked emergency vehicle.
The man later died at the scene.
Inspector Thomas appealed to members of the community who were at the shopping centre, or have dashcam footage of the centre, on Friday from 1.10pm to contact police with any information.
“There will be members of the community, I think, probably traumatised by what they’ve seen,” he said
“We do have services available that can assist them and help them work through it, but we ask that they share their details with us and their information.”
Homicide squad detectives will investigate the incident with assistance from Professional Standards Command due to the man’s death in police presence.
