Police are investigating whether a man who allegedly threw hot coffee on a nine-month-old baby has fled the country.

Baby Luka was with his mother and a friend at Hanlon Park in Brisbane on August 27 when a man allegedly dumped a Thermos of hot coffee on the infant before fleeing.

The nine-month-old baby suffered life-threatening burns and was forced to undergo multiple surgeries during a gruelling week in hospital.

The baby’s alleged assailant fled the park on foot and police have been unable to locate him, despite extensive efforts.

On Saturday, Queensland Police revealed they have expanded their search beyond the state borders.

“Detectives are continuing to investigate the matter and are working with interstate and international partner agencies to progress the investigation,” a spokesperson said.

“An update to media will be provided on Monday.”

Police have released an image of the man who they believe could assist their investigation.

He is described as being aged between 30-40 years old, of a proportionate build, with tanned skin.

At the time of the alleged attack, the man was wearing a black hat, glasses, a shirt and shorts.

Police previously described the incident as “almost like an ambush” and reiterated they are working hard to find the culprit.

Luka’s mother said she has been “blown away” by the support she and her family have received through a GoFundMe campaign set up to pay for her child’s medical expenses.

“This go fund me will be able to support Luka with all of his ongoing care needs which is truly a weight lifted off our shoulders,” she said. “(G)iven the nature of the event this will be an extremely long journey ahead for us all.”

The nine-month-old is “incredibly resilient” and was right back to “causing chaos” after his third surgery, his mother revealed.

“He is such a strong little boy and we are so so proud of him,” she said.

“This horrific event should have never happened.”
