Temperatures are expected to soar across a large swathe of south eastern Australia on Monday with authorities warning of an extreme fire danger.

Melbourne is expected to experience blistering 42C heat on the Australia Day public holiday on Monday as temperatures spike across much of Victoria and South Australia.

Port Augusta in SA is expected to reach 43C while Mildura in north-western Victoria is forecast to have a top of 44C.

Wind gusts of up to 80km/h have also been forecast.

And the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that an extreme fire danger will be in place for eastern South Australia and the western and central regions of Victoria.

“That is leading to extreme fire dangers … for much of South Australia and western and Central Victoria,” Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Dean Narramore said.

“That does include the Mount Lofty ranges and the Melbourne metropolitan area.

“If you live in these areas, or know someone that does, if any fires do get going, they’ll be uncontrollable and uncontainable leading to dangerous and erratic fire behavior.”

A complete fire ban will be in place on Monday for the Mallee, Wimmera, South West, Central, and North Central regions of Victoria.

“Tomorrow’s conditions will make it difficult for firefighters to suppress a fire should one start,” Country Fire Authority chief officer Jason Heffernan said.

“We’re asking people to follow the strict conditions associated with the Total Fire Ban declaration.

“Understand how the increased fire risk will impact you and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies.”
