A man has been charged after a body was found on the side of a rural road on Christmas morning.

A man has been charged over a fatal alleged hit-and-run in regional Queensland after a body was found on the side of the road.

The body of a man in his 20s was discovered on the side of Martyville Rd south of Mourilyan, near Innisfail, at about 5.20am on Wednesday.

Police alleged he was struck by a car and the driver failed to stop and assist him.

A 27-year-old man has since been arrested at a nearby home and charged with driving without due care causing death, and failing to remain at an incident and render assistance.

He is expected to appear in court in Cairns on Thursday.

Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

The 27-year-old is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrate’s court tomorrow.

The Forensic Crash Unit and Innisfail Criminal Investigation Branch continue to investigate.
