Dare Devils to unleash three-pronged spin attack in Big Bash

Dare Devils skipper Brenton Edwards believes a bevy of spin options will be key to his side’s chances of claiming victory in their first Barrier Reef Big Bash game on Friday night, which will be shown live on the Cairns Post website from 6.30pm.

Designer First Homes Dare Devils skipper Brenton Edwards believes a bevy of spin options will be key to his side’s chances of claiming victory against the Halpin Hurricanes on Friday night at Griffiths Park.

Both sides will be looking for their first win of the season on the night, after the Hurricanes fell to the Badgers and the Dare Devils’ had their match against the Thunder washed out in the opening round.

You can watch the game live on the Cairns Post website from 6.30pm.

REPLAY: T20 Barrier Reef Big Bash, Hurricanes v Badgers

Edwards believed the Hurricanes would enter the match with a slight advantage, having played on the Barrier Reef Big Bash stage before.

“They’re probably going to have the wood on us because they’ve played in those conditions and they’ve played under lights already,” he said.

However, the former Australian Country all-rounder believed the Dare Devil’s three-pronged spin attack of Josh Chadwick, Tom Boorman and Tajinder Vicki Kumar gave them an edge over their rivals.

“I think spin is going to play a massive part through the competition and having three quality spinners for me to call on is going to be unreal, especially behind blokes like Luke Corliss, Seppe Barletta and Tom Lever,” Edwards said.

“That’s something we’ve been really excited about, unleashing our bowling attack and seeing how they go against the top guys.

“I think bowling’s going to be very important, especially early on. If you can take a wicket or two early or just restrict the side, it makes it a lot harder for them to chase down a total or get a good total on the board.”

Edwards said he wasn’t sure what role he would play with the ball on Friday night.

“I got a little niggle but I’ve been seeing the physio every few days so I’m hoping to be good to go,” he said.

“My main priority at this stage is the longer format.

With the shorter stuff, if I do have a niggle, I’ll give a few of the other boys in the Dare Devils side a good crack.

“If I feel like I’m good to go, I’ll have a crack, but I think we’ve got enough bowling to get us through at the moment.

“When you look at our attack, it’s pretty well balanced, and that’s without me even bowling.”

“This week’s match could also be affected given what’s predicted and we will look to do the same if that should happen this Friday,” Maher said.

“Those will be the only matches rescheduled, otherwise any other games will be declared a draw, with teams to receive two points each.”

Maher said the four franchise owners were all in favour of the decision.
