A Gold Coast suburb has been named fifth most storm-affected area in Queensland

A NEW report lists the top five most storm-affected suburbs on the Gold Coast. And not all are where you might expect

Storm hits Gold Coast

NEW data has revealed 11 per cent of all storm claims in Queensland during the last financial year came from the Gold Coast — listing the area as the fifth most storm affected area in Queensland.

An NRMA report also lists Tamborine as the most storm-affected suburb in the Gold Coast, and the fifth worst suburb in the state for storm-related claims.

Burleigh Waters is second on the list, with Helensvale listed third worst for storm claims.

The data was released today as the Gold Coast goes through a another spell of wet weather.

The forecast is for a lot more rain this weekend, but the good news is that Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Chris Joseph says storms are unlikely.

“For the Gold Coast, it’s just going to be rain,” he said.

“For Saturday, it’s expected to be 15 to 25 millimetres of rain.

“Sunday will be the peak with an expected 25 to 50 millimetres of rain.”

The bad news is that the rain is expected to continue throughout next week.

“Monday is more showers around 8-25 millimetres,” Mr Joseph said.

“Tuesday a little less, and it will start decreasing over Wednesday and Thursday.”

Although Queensland experienced one of its driest years on record, over a third of all home claims made in the state were as a result of storm damage.

The SES said Queenslanders are underestimating the damage storms can cause.

SES Queensland Fire and Emergency Assistant Commissioner Peter Jeffery said storm and cyclone season is an extremely busy time for QFES.

“Last year’s storm and cyclone season saw more than 5,400 tasks completed by our SES volunteers,” Mr Jeffery said.

“Storms can hit anywhere, with very little notice, and cause intensive damage.”

NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager for Safer Communities Ramana James is urging everyone to take the time now to prepare for storm season.

“It’s still a concern so many young people are underestimating the impact storms can have,” she said.
