A man travelling through Katherine has been charged after he was allegedly found in possession of two illegal firearms and more than a kilogram of cocaine.
About 10am on Monday, the man, 46, was stopped at a service station by detectives, Dog Operations Unit members and Australian Border Force after they received intelligence of the his return back to the Northern Territory from Queensland.
The vehicle was lawfully searched, Northern Territory Police said, and authorities found about 1.25kg of cocaine, a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle, and ammunition.
NT Police said other lawful search warrants took place during this time at the man’s business premises and home in the Greater Darwin Region.
A small quantity of cannabis and cocaine, drug paraphernalia and ammunition were found as a result of this, NT Police said.
The man was arrested without incident and has since been charged with: Supply commercial quantity schedule 1 dangerous drug; Possess commercial quantity schedule 1 dangerous drug; Possess prohibited firearm x 2; Possess ammunition without a license; Possess tainted property; and Possess less than traffickable quantity schedule 2 dangerous drug
The man was remanded to appear before Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.
Detective Superintendent David Richardson said the seizure was “significant” for the NT, and “sends a clear message, illicit drugs and prohibited firearms have no place in our community”.
“The NT Police Force remains committed to disrupting the supply of illicit drugs in the community and urge anyone with information on the illegal possession and supply of drugs in our communities to make contact on 131 444,” he said.
