A senior Darwin doctor accused of harbouring a vile collection of child abuse material could soon face the Supreme Court.

The 45-year-old Royal Darwin Hospital worker – who cannot be named for legal reasons – faces two counts of possessing or controlling child abuse material.

The arrest of the long-term hospital employee sent shockwaves through the Top End Health system when he was arrested in February.

On Tuesday defence barrister Peter Maley said both he and prosecutors were seeking a two-month adjournment to the case, which has been moving through the Darwin Local Court for seven months.

“There are negotiations in train in terms of getting some agreed positions,” Mr Maley said.

The senior doctor is currently expected to face the Supreme Court, as his matter was adjourned for a preliminary examination on the papers on December 9.

The senior doctor was previously granted bail, after being forced to surrender his passport and provide a significant bond.

NT Health has confirmed that the clinician was no longer on duty or on site and therefore not presently treating patients in the Northern Territory health system.
