Traffic on a major Sydney highway has been thrown into chaos after a truck full of milk swerved off the road and hit an embankment.

Emergency services rushed to the M5 at Milperra just before the Henry Lawson exit just after 6am after the B-double truck rolled, spilling milk all over the road.

The truck was heading east not far from the turn-off when it left the road and rolled.

A NSW Police spokesman told NCA Newswire the truck’s tanker had been full of milk.

Images from the scene show litres of spilt milk across the highway.

The driver had been assessed by paramedics at the scene but is not injured.

One of three eastbound lanes was closed as emergency services worked to clear the road with traffic banked at least six kilometres.

All lanes are now open but traffic remains heavy in both directions.

The salvage of the trailer will happen after peak traffic clears, with warnings eastbound lanes will need to close when a crane arrives onsite.

Live Traffic NSW has warned drivers to “take care and allow plenty of extra travel time”.

Drivers are being urged to use the Hume Highway from Camden Valley Way or Moorebank Ave instead.

“Traffic is still busy so continue to allow extra time until traffic eases through the area,” Live Traffic NSW said.
