Driver barrels through red light after 17 seconds

Wild dashcam footage has captured the moment a car barrelled through a red light in Brisbane, crashing into a stream of traffic before the driver was detained by tradies.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at the intersection of Hellawell and Beaudesert roads between Acacia Ridge and Sunnybank Hills in the city’s south.

Footage shared by Dashcam Owners Australia on Tuesday showed the blue Mazda hatchback flying through the intersection at high speed, a full 17 seconds after the start of the video.

The light had been red the entire time until that point.

The Mazda is seen smashing into the front of a white Toyota hatchback, which does a 360-degree spin, colliding with a red Mazda SUV in the next lane before coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection.

“Holy f**k!” the driver filming the video says.

A number of tradies rush to the aid of the driver of the white hatchback.

The driver of the blue Mazda is seen getting out of the car and wandering off the road, before a tradie in high-vis chases him down and appears to raise his fist at him as other bystanders stop him from leaving the scene.

Queensland Police confirmed a 26-year-old Carseldine man had been charged following an alleged traffic crash in Sunnybank Hills on Monday.

“It will be alleged at approximately 9.45am a blue Mazda 3 was travelling south on Beaudesert Road when it failed to stop at a red light near Hellawell Road,” a spokeswoman said.

“It will be further alleged the car then stuck two other vehicles, a Mazda CX30 and a Toyota Yaris. The driver of the Mazda 3 was taken into police custody at the scene.”

The man was given a notice to appear for dangerous operation of a vehicle and driving under the influence.

He is due to appear at Richlands Magistrates Court on August 6.

The video has been viewed nearly 100,000 times and drawn more than 500 comments.

“I’m so glad my dear friend is still alive,” one woman wrote. “Please rest up and get better soon. I’m glad your angels were looking after you yesterday.”

Another said, “That poor person in the white car, if they had been a second later would have got the driver’s side.”

Many viewers were quick to praise the tradie who sprinted across the road to stop the driver from leaving the scene.

“God love the tradie who spotted old mate casually walking away … and crash tackled him,” one wrote.

“Love how the guy bolts from the other side of the road and confronts the guy that caused the accident,” added another.

“This is cooked it’s a regularly used intersection by my house — it’s always busy could have easily been fatal,” wrote a third.
