The Aussie animal trend that’s only getting bigger

A strange new trend is exploding in Australia – and it proves that deep down, Aussies are total softies.

A strange new trend is exploding in Australia – and it proves that Aussies are total softies at heart.

Uber has revealed that more Aussies are bringing their pets out than ever before, whether it be to a function, social event or day-to-day errands.

If you’re like me and you have an emotional attachment to your dog, then it seems only right that wherever we go, they go too.

The ride-share company also revealed the most unusual animals that riders have brought along for trips – and they go well beyond the usual household pets.

Drivers worldwide have reported everything from parrots, rabbits and turtles to more bizarre guests – including a bearded dragon, a mini pig, a ferret, a baby goat, a sheep and even a python.

More and more Aussies are opting to bring their furry friends out with them.

One rider turned up carrying a bag of live fish, while others managed to forget their animals altogether, leaving kittens and exotic fish behind on the back seat.

The unusual roll call comes as Uber Pet is officially rolled out nationally across Australia, meaning Aussies can now bring their pets (no matter how strange) in every city Uber operates in – from Sydney and Brisbane to Ballarat, Shepparton and Townsville.

The expansion arrives ahead of what is typically the busiest period for pet travel.

Uber says Christmas Day sees more than double the number of pet trips compared with any other day of the year, as Aussies enjoy a drink alongside their furry friends.

As pet ownership grows and more people treat animals as part of their family, Uber says riders are increasingly choosing not to leave their pets at home when heading out.

“Extending Uber Pet nationwide is part of our ongoing commitment to help all Aussies get from A to B – including their four-legged mates,” said Emma Foley, Managing Director of Uber Australia & New Zealand.

“The summer holidays are always hectic, and this is one way we’re using technology to make life easier – giving seniors, teens, and now pet owners all over Australia the freedom to head to the beach, park or Christmas lunch without worrying about who’s driving.”

Uber Pet can be selected in the app, matching riders with a driver who’s opted in to carry animals.

A $6 surcharge applies and goes entirely to the driver.

Only Uber Pet-enabled drivers can accept your pet trips, a system intended to ensure everyone is comfortable with the occasional furry passenger.

Service animals continue to travel through standard Uber options.

With dozens of regional areas now included in the rollout, the service proves helpful for riders outside major cities who want to take their pet on an occasional date to the pub.
