Retired UK man drove without a licence for more than 70 years

Police pulled over an 84-year-old driver near a supermarket this week – only to discover he didn’t hold a valid licence, and never had.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

It turns out you can outrun the law, but only for 72 years.

Police pulled over an 84-year-old driver near a supermarket in Bulwell, in central England, this week only to discover he didn’t have a valid licence, nor had he ever.

The retired man, who police said had trouble standing and hearing, admitted that he’d been driving without a licence or insurance since he was 12 years old.

In a Facebook post, the Bulwell, Rise Park and Highbury Vale Police team said he had never had a crash.

“Thankfully he had never had an accident, caused anyone an injury, and never made anyone lose out financially, by hitting them whilst uninsured!” the post read.

Police said the man had been detected using automatic number plate recognition cameras in the area.

They did not release the man’s name or what penalties he was issued, but said his blue MINI had been spotted by the traffic camera, which identified it as being operated without proper documents.

“Due to the increased number of ANPR cameras in Nottingham, even on the small trips, you are likely to hit a camera, so make sure your documents are in order … because it will catch up with you … one day …” police added.
