Fiery debate has erupted in response to a road rule quiz that asked drivers to identify correct driving behaviour on a roundabout.
RACQ asked Facebook users on Wednesday to share which of two cars using a roundabout had legal right of way over the other.
One car, coloured yellow, had partially completed its right turn, while another car, coloured red, had yet to enter the roundabout.
“The yellow vehicle is turning right at the spiral roundabout and needs to move to the outside lane to exit. Who gives way, red or yellow?” RACQ asked.
The question sparked a passionate reaction from close to 400 people, many arguing that drivers often paid little attention to correct roundabout etiquette.
Several noted that while it was obvious the yellow vehicle had right of way over the red, in reality that order wasn’t always respected.
“I see so many people just coming onto the roundabout before I’ve gone past. It’s so annoying. No one follows the road rules. Sometimes I beep them,” one woman wrote in a comment.
“Yellow is already in roundabout so red has to give way. But like a lot of drivers here, they will probably try to gun it and make it round before the yellow gets there even though they clearly don’t have the room,” another wrote.
“I do this exact same roundabout five times a day and the red car so often abuses me,” a third said.
Someone else agreed the driver of cars in the red vehicle’s position was sometimes impatient, leaving the person in the yellow with no choice but to slow down in the middle of their manoeuvre.
“The yellow one will have hit the brakes because the red car will floor it so he just beats the yellow car, because the red car will approach the roundabout too fast and is unable to pull up safely,” they wrote.
Road rules stipulate that in every scenario, all vehicles must slow down or stop to give way to those already in the roundabout.
