A retired firefighter tried to save an elderly man who was killed in a horrific car crash and his vehicle burst into flames.

An elderly man has died after his car crashed into a tree and burst into flames in South Australia’s southeast.

The man, believed to be a 78-year-old local resident, was driving along South Bokara Rd in Mypolonga, near Murray Bridge, when the incident happened at about 9.15pm on Wednesday.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, died at the scene.

A retired firefighter who lives nearby tried to pull the man from the burning vehicle after he heard a loud noise and ran to help, 7 News reported.

SA Police have not yet confirmed the man’s identity.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined as major crash officers continue to investigate.

South Bokara Rd was closed between Kellett Rd and Hill Rd but has since reopened.

The man’s death brings the state’s road toll to 74 this year compared with 66 at the same time last year.
