A luxury $350,000 car has gone up in flames, with video footage capturing the moment a man used a pizza box to light the vehicle on fire while parked on a Sydney street.
The McLaren, which was purchased by its owner over a year ago and listed for sale just three days ago, was destroyed in the blaze in Sefton, in Sydney’s west, late on Friday night.
Security footage shared by 9News shows the moment a man, dressed in a hoodie and clutching an umbrella, lit a cardboard pizza box on fire on the sreet.
In the footage, the man can be seen using his umbrella to shield the flames before moving behind a tree to hide while another car passed by.
Moments later, he crouches down and slides the box under the bumper of the car before racing off down the street.
Neighbours quickly spotted the blaze and attempted to put out the flames with a hose.
But they were unsuccessful and within 15 minutes, the fire had taken a hold of the vehicle.
The owner of the car, Hamad Ajajz, and his son arrived home to find firefighters dousing the car in water.
“It’s devastating to be honest. The way we came in and seen it lit up on fire,” he told 9News.
The father-of-three had just listed the car for sale online three days ago.
“I can’t even look at it,” he shared.
The car is insured.
Police are working to track down the offender with no arrests yet to be made.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious and officers from Bankstown Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident.,” police said in a statement to news.com.au.
