Aussies don’t want these cars: Toyota

The world’s biggest carmaker has decreed that Aussies simply don’t want these cars anymore - and we just have to cop it.

Toyota has officially unveiled the long-anticipated compact version of its iconic off-roader, but keen Aussie buyers will have to admire it from afar.

The Land Cruiser FJ has been revealed as Toyota’s mini off-roader, and it’s aimed at a very specific type of buyer.

However, despite strong online interest, Toyota Australia has confirmed there are no current plans to introduce the model here.

“Toyota Australia continuously explores opportunities to evolve our vehicle line-up,” the company said in a statement.

“However, we have no current plans to introduce the LandCruiser FJ to our market.”

That decision likely comes down to the powertrain and the demands of the Australian market.

The LandCruiser FJ is powered solely by a six-speed automatic, 2.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine capable of producing 120kW and 246Nm.

To put this into perspective, Prado here in Australia comes with a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel, which makes 150kW and 500N, making it a favourable choice among those who need to tow or travel off-road.

The FJ currently comes only in a petrol-only set-up and, with Australia entering a period of stricter emissions standards and a growing preference for electric or hybrid options, the FJ may not suit local demand.

It appears Toyota has decided Aussies don’t want and can’t or won’t buy petrol cars anymore.

However, rumours are swirling that Toyota will continue to work on the FJ to suit the needs of different markets globally.

The FJ keeps the classic LandCruiser design, with a rugged, boxy cabin silhouette incorporating a ‘dice motif’.

Toyota’s aim with the FJ is to provide customisable off-road capability.

And that’s clear with the way it’s been developed.

The mini LandCruiser has been built to allow damaged parts to be replaced individually rather than removing an entire assembly.

Additionally, Owners will have a range of accessories, providing them with the option to personalise their vehicle further or add off-road upgrades.

Toyota say this customisation offering will be available throughout the model’s life cycle.

Despite having a smaller engine, Toyota claim that the FJ LandCruiser retains the brand’s trademark off-road ability, claiming wheel articulation similar to that of the 70 Series.

It is set to feature a wheelbase 270mm shorter than the 250 Series and boasts a tight 11-metre turning circle, close to that of the Suzuki Jimny XL, a direct rival.

Inside, the cabin continues the familiar LandCruiser theme, with a squared-off steering wheel, a low-set dashboard, and a large central touchscreen paired with a digital instrument cluster.

While Toyota has confirmed there are no current plans to bring this version of the FJ to Australia, its combination of compact dimensions and genuine off-road ability could make it an appealing option here.

According to the brand, it will continue investing in the Land Cruiser to “meet societal needs and improve customers’ lives worldwide”.
