An eight-year-old girl who hopped behind the wheel of her mum’s SUV and drove to a Target 25 minutes away was found shopping alone in the department store.
The girl was reported missing from her home in Bedford, outside of Cleveland, Ohio, early on Sunday morning.
Her family said they hadn’t seen her or their 2020 Nissan Rouge for two hours.
A neighbour told police their home security camera had captured the small girl getting inside the car “with no one but herself” and driving off, WKYC-TV News reported.
Cops later received reports of a small child behind the wheel of a car driving along a major road kilometres away.
Dashcam footage captured the moment a concerned driver rang police to report a vehicle behind him “swerving everywhere”.
“It looks like a kid,” he can be heard saying in the dramatic vision.
The car was later found in the parking lot of a Target store in Bainbridge – 21 kilometres away from the girl’s home.
She was spotted inside the store unharmed and shopping, police said.
“Well I’ve finally found a woman who’s in more of a hurry to shop at Target than my wife.” Bedford police joked.
“That’s right, an eight-year-old took mommy’s car this morning and drove to Target in Bainbridge to shop.
“Not sure what she bought, or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%,” the department added.
“We did let her finish her Frappuccino. We’re not mean.”
The girl confessed she had struck a mailbox during her adventure, leaving a dent in her parents’ car, but was otherwise unharmed.
Police said the girl was too young to face any criminal charges.
