Honda is set to swim against the tide of high-riding SUVs with a new Accord sedan confirmed for Australia.

The 11th-generation Honda Accord sedan will arrive in hybrid form as a rival to the Toyota Camry and Mazda6.

The Accord is set to be sold in one high-grade model positioned upstream from key rivals, priced from $64,900 drive-away.

That makes it $3000 more expensive that the outgoing model currently in run-out for $61,900 drive-away.

The Accord is pitched as a luxury model for loyal owners rather than a bestseller in Australia.

The brand has only sold 240 examples of the Accord in the past two years.

Toyota sold more than 25,000 Camrys in that time.

Honda Australia managing director Carolyn McMahon said the Accord had a rich history in Australia dating back to 1977.

“This new model offers the premium feel that Accord is renowned for, coupled with additional technological advancements, including the arrival of Google built-in and the next generation of Honda Connect,” she said.

The Google system in the car includes Google maps that extend to the driver’s instrument display. Improved connectivity includes an smartphone app that serves as a digital key for the car.

Other equipment includes a 12.3-inch infotainment system with a 12-speaker Bose stereo, along with LED headlights and an 11.5-inch head-up display.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid engine that sends 152kW to the front wheels.

It’s a similar engine to the hybrid motor found in Honda’s CR-V, a car that won News Corp’s annual Car of the Year title in 2023.

Honda says the new Accord is more refined than before, with particular attention paid to reducing road noise.

It goes on sale on May 1.
