Hyundai have recalled about 9000 iX35 vehicles after authorities found a manufacturing defect in the anti-lock braking system could cause a fire.

It was found brake fluid might leak into the anti-lock braking system control module, which could cause an electrical short circuit leading to a vehicle engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Vehicle owners were warned to keep their cars away from flammable materials or structures and not to leave them parked in a garage until the defect was fixed.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts issued a recall notice for all variants of Hyundai iX35 models made between 2012 and 2013.

A regulator spokesman said a vehicle fire could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders or damage to property.

“If your vehicle displays an engine warning light, please stop driving and contact your local Hyundai dealer,” a spokesman said.

Vehicle owners were instructed to contact their nearest authorised Hyundai dealer to make an appointment to have work carried out free of charge to fix the defect.

Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by contacting the Hyundai Customer Experience Team on 1800 186 306 or check the vehicle identification number by visiting vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-006298.
