A man is in hospital after being hit with a car during a bizarre altercation on the Gold Coast.

Police were called to Bothwell St in Robina at around 11pm on Wednesday after reports of an altercation involving three people.

It was understood a 57-year-old man had heard a “verbal argument” between a 19-year-old man and woman outside his home, before he left his house to investigate what was happening.

A police spokesman said the man, who was a neighbour, allegedly approached the pair armed with a knife.

During the altercation, the 19-year-old man tried to flee the situation in his VW Golf and allegedly hit the armed man with his car.

Officers were called to the scene and the 19-year-old man returned a negative roadside breath and drug test.

Paramedics on scene assessed the 57-year-old who had back and limb pain before taking him to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The vehicle involved was towed for a mechanical inspection.
