Tributes have poured in for a Gold Coast motocross rider killed in a freak accident on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Corey “Magoo” Whittington died after a crash during a competition at Elamon Creek, despite the best efforts of paramedics to save him.

The 44-year-old former Kiwi was a well-respected figure of the Gold Coast motocross scene and was competing in round two of the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club’s motocross championship series when tragedy struck in front of horrified racers and spectators.

Liam Walker took to social media to mourn the loss of “one of the toughest and badest (sic) motherf---ers around”.

“Seeing your passion for this sport is something I respected so much,” he wrote.

“You’re such an inspiration to people in ways you probably never knew.

“I’m going to miss that cheeky enthusiasm a million times over and I know you’ll be riding up there, getting ready for the day to battle again.”

Daryl Munyard took to Facebook writing: “Fly high my bro... you will be remembered fondly by all. RIP Magoo.”

Motocross is often viewed as a dangerous sport, with Mr Whittington’s death coming just weeks after a training accident claimed the life of Gold Coast motocross legend Jayden “Jayo” Archer.
