WORK has begun on a $14.7 million expansion for Helensvale State High School, which includes 12 new classrooms and dedicated areas for hospitality students.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the new three-storey building will be available for use by the school’s entire 2500-strong cohort at the start of the 2019 school year.

The new block will feature hospitality areas, dedicated spaces for senior students, staffrooms, flexible learning spaces, kitchenettes and meeting rooms.

“Students studying hospitality will also benefit from a commercial-sized kitchen, which may support the development of a restaurant and cafe in the future,” Ms Grace said.

Executive Principal Karen Lindsay said the new hospitality area would be shared with the community and showcase the talents of hospitality students.

“The complex will help us provide our students with pathways to their preferred futures,” Ms Lindsay said.

The expansion to the high school comes as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $200 million Advancing Queensland Schools package.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to building classrooms and schools where they are needed most to support students across Queensland, including here on the Gold Coast,” Ms Grace said.

“The northern Gold Coast region has experienced major growth over recent years and Helensvale State High School is one of Queensland’s largest high schools.”

“One of four new state schools to open in Queensland this year was Picnic Creek State School, located at Coomera East.”

The previous expansion to the facilities of Helensvale State High was in 2015 with the construction of Discovery Place to welcome Year 7s into high school.

Ms Grace said construction is also underway at Pimpama State School, which is due to completed later this year.
