Woolworths launches limited-edition flavour mud cake

The supermarket has delighted customers with a “delicious” new version of a cult bakery item – but get in quick.

No baked good sums up Australian food culture better than the humble supermarket mud cake.

The dense and incredibly rich treat is so beloved it’s a feature at many a birthday party and social gathering – with some couples going so far as to serve it on their wedding day.

And while of course we could make our own, it never tastes quite as good as the ones we find on grocery store shelves.

To keep us on our toes, Woolworths has confirmed the release of a brand new variety of the iconic classic, landing in stores across Australia this week – Birthday Cake Mudcake.

Woolies describes the limited-edition treat, which retails for $6.80, as a “rainbow sprinkle vanilla mud cake topped with white chocolate ganache, sprinkles, cookie pieces and a white chocolate drizzle”.

It’ll roll out in stores across all states and territories from this Wednesday, May 31 – but the cake has already been spotted out in the wild by some excited shoppers.

Dozens have taken to social media to declare they can’t wait to “devour” the new cake flavour.

“Will be the first thing on my shopping list that’s for sure,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“I need this,” said a second.

While a third wrote: “Love this variety. So didn’t see this coming!”

The Birthday Cake iteration follows on from other special edition mud cake varieties from Woolies, including Mint Cookies & Cream and Caramelised White Chocolate.

Over on TikTok, user @nectoriouspapi declared it “one of the best flavours they’ve ever brought out”, telling his more than 9000 followers to “run, don’t walk”.

“This should be permanent,” one viewer wrote in the comments.

“Omg need these,” said another.

While a third commented: “It’s my birthday next week and I demand my man buy this because YUM.”
