The Gold Coast Hinterland drive offering stunning 360 degree views in Beechmont

IT’S all about spectacular Hinterland views this week as we head up to this top spot for some amazing landscape snaps.

Flight of the dandelion people

FROM the outset it may seem just like an ordinary road used by Beechmont farmers and a few residents.

But as you travel down windy S W Road, you’ll start to see why I’ve come back to this place time and time again.

The top of Beechmont is relatively unknown thanks to the charm offered by Lower Beechmont, but trust me — a quiet drive through these rolling hills is a photographer’s dream if you know where to look.

The scenic drive from the Gold Coast to the end of S W Road will take less than an hour, but you will feel worlds away. I usually take my pet dogs as well, as the road offers enough space for your pup to explore safely on leash and for you to take in those magnificent views.

After a short drive after entering S W Road where trees line the side, the road opens up more with views to both sides of hills dotted with cows, miniature horses, farmer’s sheds and country homes. There will be a fork in the road as you drive along; bear right and you’ll spot a sloping hill to your right.

If you’re lucky, curious cows will be there along the fence line and make for an adorable photo against a beautiful backdrop. At the end of the road, you’ll finally spot those stunning 360 degree views that stretch for kilometres.

Depending on the time of the year, the sides of the road are studded with deep purple slash red, reed-like plants with feathery tops.

At other times, the hills are just calm seas of green hues. So don’t be shy, jump out and have a bit of a wander. And don’t forget the camera.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE ... DO

Make use of that wonderful natural space the area offers by stopping in at Syd Duncan Park.

While there is a playground here — useful for the kids — it is an open park just waiting for weary (or super-relaxed) travellers to soak up the quiet atmosphere.

The area overlooks Hinze Dam, so keep your camera handy.

EAT AND DRINK

Advancetown Hotel is a quick five minute detour off Nerang Murwillumbah Road and a good stop for a wholesome, country-style pub lunch.

There are vegetarian meals and gluten-free options, burgers, salads and even lasagne on offer.

The family-friendly bistro is open from 12pm — 2pm.

And for those wanting to catch up on a bit of sporting action, their Sportsman’s Bar is open similar times and offers a daily counter lunch special.

DISCOVER

Rosin’s Lookout on Beechmont Road offers not only spectacular views of Numinbah Valley.

The popular area is also the site of a hang-gliding launch area.

Locals and tourists alike flock to the area to watch the hang-gliders take off and soar over the valley, trying to decipher where the hang-glider eventually landed.

You can take a quick break here, with BBQ facilities close by or imply sit on the grass and people-watch.
