STARTING a travel blog is easy.
It is whether or not you become successful that is the difficult part, according to writer Liz Carlson — owner of one of the top travel blogs in the world, Young Adventuress.
An American now based in the mountains of New Zealand, she shares stories of her travel adventures while inspiring others to do the same.
The 30-year-old, along with travel journalist Georgia Rickard and instagrammer Lauren Bath, created The Travel Bootcamp to teach people how to build an online business, personal branding, how to pitch and what to charge as well as how to build a career in travel.
“It was important for us to share this and be a part of the development of the industry we care a lot about, but also help shape and inspire the next generation of travel creators and create an open dialogue in a no BS way,” she said.
She credits social media platforms like Instagram for changing the influencing game.
“Instagram has stripped away the old rules of media and has opened doors for anyone to create a career in travel, like with blogging,” she said.
“Instagram is among one of the most influential ways we consume media of our age.
“It’s a great place to build a brand and can reach a lot of people.
“The most important thing to consider when venturing into the world of travel blogging is to focus on what you’re passionate about.
“Don’t think about money. Build your voice and your style.
“Most bloggers won’t earn a full income from blogging but there are plenty that do.”
Ms Carlson is one of them.
She makes a “healthy six-figure salary” through her blog and said she knows other bloggers earning “millions”.
“It can be very lucrative if you play your cards right,” she said.
“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication with no guarantee of success which is why it’s really important to be passionate about it because that will carry you through, even when you earn no money.
“It’s also important to really pay attention to what works and what doesn’t work with your audience and evolve as the industry changes.”
