Guam local says her island home should be known for more than just rising tensions with North Korea

SEVEN reasons why this tropical 550-square-kilometre nuclear flashpoint should be your next holiday destination.

NEARLY eight months after North Korea threatened to wipe it off the map, the largest island in Micronesia has enjoyed its recent run with publicity.

Being home to major US air force and naval bases, Guam has been left with a missile target on its back.

As a Guam local, here are seven reasons why this small island should be your next holiday destination:

1. Weather:

No need to pack your oversized winter coats or snow boots, Guam stays around 28C year round, so pack swimwear and sunscreen and take a dip in the crystal clear waters. Guam brings slip, slap, slop to a different level — trust me.

2. Price:

Often considered the ‘poor man’s Hawaii’ Guam offers the same excursions for half the price and double the fun. A single room at the Hilton in Oahu, Hawaii can see tourists spending approximately $400, but in Guam you’ll spend only $150. However, if you’re looking to go grocery shopping while you are here be prepared for an expensive bill (can anyone tell me why milk is so expensive?).

3. Food:

Bring your appetite. Chamorro barbecue offers delicious pork ribs, red rice, and local vegetables. Fresh fruit grows almost everywhere. Hungry? Grab some fruit from the trees — you might just have to fight off a herd of hungry boars.

4. Activities:

Ever wanted to climb the world’s tallest mountain or swim in the deepest sea? Guam is home to Mount LamLam and the Mariana Trench. Despite the common misconception that Mount Everest is the world’s tallest mountain, Guam takes the lead when measured from the bottom of the sea floor, rising 11.527m compared to Everest at 8848m (sorry Everest). Not only will you have bragging rights but you’ll also be able to hike LamLam in only one hour. Additionally, there are plenty of options to dive, snorkel, trek waterfalls, and relax at the beach.

5. Wildlife:

Animal lovers will enjoy Guam’s large array of wildlife. From water buffalo, boars, deer, and stray boonie dogs it is impossible to visit the island without seeing at least one of them. Just make sure you carry a golf club with you to protect your ankles from mischievous boonie dog bites if you find yourself wandering the streets. The coral reef around Guam is home to thousands of fish and sea turtles who are not afraid to swim right up next to you — just be careful if that fish is a barracuda.

6. People:

The indigenous Chamorro people have called Guam their home for thousands of years. One night of celebration and you’ll find yourself with 10 new brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles. You may find that the local accountant actually lives a double life as a fire and machete dancer (save yourself the embarrassment and never try to replicate them). There is a running list of Chamorro and fire dancing shows for individuals interested in learning more about the local culture.

7. Untouched:

For some, Guam is a place where you can truly escape reality. Some leftover bunkers and tanks from World War II are still standing in the jungle — as well as sunken battleships in the sea. Guam is a history enthusiast’s dream vacation. Just look out for any unexploded bombs as you make your way through the jungles.

No guide book can prepare you for the amount of fun, relaxation, and adventuring you will partake in on this beautiful island we Guamanians call home.
