IT is a surfer's worst nightmare spending two weeks of precious annual leave and thousands of dollars travelling halfway around the world to find their destination swarming with hungry surfers jostling for a wave. A wave more crowded than their home break.
One Australian surf travel agency says it has a solution, promising uncrowded waves in one of the most beautiful and wave-rich regions on earth, The Maldives.
Global surf travel company World Surfaris has teamed up with the management of Hudhuranfushi Resort as the official surf operations managers and implemented a Sustainable Surf Tourism Initiative, limiting the number of surfers staying at the resort to a maximum of 35.
Founder and managing director of World Surfaris Shaun Levings said the initiative was in response to overcrowding of the resort's house wave and region.
``Surfer numbers have spiralled out of control in recent years. There has been aggression in the water and on land. Nobody wants that on their holiday,'' he said.
As part of Maldivian tourism laws, Hudhuranfushi guests already have exclusive use of the house wave in front of the resort known as Lohis that wraps around the 500m by 100m Lohifushi Island.
Now each guest wishing to surf will have to pre-register for one of the 35 allocated surf passes as part of the Surfer Management Plan.
``Limiting surfer numbers staying on the island shows the resort's dedication to ensuring guests catch plenty of waves and there is a good vibe,'' Shaun said.
He said guests of Hudhuranfushi are also able to access those surrounding breaks.
``There are six other world-class waves in the region, within 20 minutes of the resort in a boat escorted by one of the four resident surf guides.''
One of those guides, Richard Kotch, said the Surfer Management Plan was an ``awesome initiative''.
``Now guests can surf one of the best waves in the Maldives without any crowds. Lohis is one of the most consistent waves in the world. For eight months of the year there is pretty much a rideable wave every day,'' he said.
A seven-night surfer package at Hudhuranfushi Resort costs from $2819 and includes accommodation in a beach villa, return airport transfers, all meals and drinks including alcohol, allocation on to the Surfer Management Plan and exclusive access to Lohis surf break, two boat trips each day to surrounding waves and the expert assistance of four surf guides.
Surf bookings at Hudhuranfushi Resort in the 2014 season, March-October, are available exclusively through World Surfaris and their international affiliates.
